Dunstable Downs – one Grease Guzzler installed

The Project
The National Trust Visitor Centre, Dunstable Downs; the Downs have been voted one of the seven natural wonders in the East of England with amazing views of the Vale of Aylesbury and Chiltern Ridge. About 400,000 visitors pass through the fantastic site each year and the cafeteria at the visitor centre caters for the hungry ones with food such as bacon rolls and burgers.

The Problem
With the plans to build a new, bigger visitor centre, serving a wider range of food and providing seating for customers, the National Trust decided to put in a grease management solution that can cope with an increased amount of produced fat, oils and grease which float into the drains. Historically, grease was disposed of manually on a daily basis often causing mess through spillages.

The Solution
The product used to solve the problem is WPL's Grease Guzzler. This product is an innovative, self contained grease management system designed for commercial catering facilities serving hot food and producing waste: Fat, Oils and Grease (FOG). The system utilizes patented pre-activation bio-technology, ensuring efficient and effective drain cleansing with minimal impact on the environment. The Grease Guzzler is designed as a ‘fit and forget' product, which helps to prevent odors caused by rancid grease and allows the customer to increase the dosing frequency, up to four times a day depending on the loading of FOG.

The Test
The Grease Guzzler was installed in March 2006 at the current visitor centre to test if it was sufficient for the new visitor centre and the test was a success.   Since its installation,   the Grease Guzzler has been automatically dosing the drains with S65 bio-fluid each day once the kitchen has closed, keeping the drains free from grease build-up. Utilising patented pre-activation bio-technology, the Grease Guzzler thoroughly manages the fluctuating loads of grease being produced, i.e. more visitors pass through in summer, resulting in a higher demand for hot food and snacks. Jeremy Sutton, Property Manager, stated “I am very satisfied with the product. It really is a fit and forget solution. All we do is check if the lights are on and then it does all the work by itself. Before we got the Grease Guzzler installed, we were bottling and disposing of the grease on a daily basis, and this time can now be used more efficiently. There is no grease left in the drains!”

The Outcome
The Grease Guzzler will be installed in the new bigger visitor centre at the end of September 2006 due to the positive outcome of the testing period.
