WPL HIGH PERFORMANCE AERATED FILTER (HIPAF)

THE SLOOP PUBLIC HOUSE IN HAYWARDS HEATH.

The Project

The Sloop country pub, in Haywards Heath, recently required a new wastewater treatment plant.Due to seasonal changes, this replacement system needed to be capable of processing various flows and loads, which was also reliable.

The Sloop’s existing wastewater treatment plant, (a competitor’s Submerged Aerated Filters (SAF) unit), produced strong odours and had high maintenance costs, which had a devastating effect on the pubs’ day-to-day running and therefore on its revenue.

The new system would have to tackle both these issues.

The Problem

The pub’s existing SAF unit was undersized and had no balance tank; a critical part of this type of unit. This caused the media pack to collapse, resulting in the Environment Agency blocking off the outlet pipe, effectively turning the unit into a cesspool. This caused major disruptions to the running of the pub, and costs were incurred by the pub due to the failing plant.

Furthermore, the existing tank had to be de-sludged at least 3 times per week, leaving strong odours throughout the pub and its garden. With the cost of tankering this became very expensive, particularly when carried out this frequently. Therefore a solution had to be found quickly.

The brewery and landlord hired a consultant to assess potential replacement wastewater treatment plants. The consultant carried out an in-depth study of manufacturers in the market, to establish which plant would offer the right performance, reliability, together with a small installation footprint and consent guarantees. The reduction of ongoing costs throughout the life of the plant, was also an important part of the criteria.

The Solution

The pub chose the WPL HiPAF, as it fitted their criteria in the following ways:
  1. It has a small installation footprint.
  2. It has a baffle wall in the primary tank which negates the need for an upstream tank to combat ragging.
  3. It has a forward feed system to balance flows and offers a lifetime performance guarantee (this is of high important in the pub trade).
  4. Performance is guaranteed down to a 5% utilisation.

The HiPAF is used extensively by the water utilities as its performance and reliability were proven over a number of years. WPL also recommended Soma Services, a WPL accredited installer, to install the unit to be able to provide guarantees on the unit and installation.
